Taxes & International Tax Office

J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for Scholars & Student Interns

All J-1 scholars and their J-2 dependents present in the U.S. during any part of a calendar year (January 1 to December 31) must file an annual tax form (often called "tax returns" because you may get some money back).

If you did not work or earn income, file Form 8843, Statement for Exempt Individuals.

Employees

If you are a new international employee, or stipend recipient being paid through the payroll system, the International Tax Office will contact you and ask you to complete tax information.

You can find additional resources below to help you prepare for your appointment with a tax specialist:

Filing a tax return if you work or earn income

The International Tax Office offers a limited number of free subscriptions to Sprintax, an online platform for filing nonresident tax returns. You will receive an email with details early in the calendar year.

For more information about taxes, see the resources above offered by International Tax.
