As a J-1 Scholar it is your responsibility to maintain your immigration status and understand the rules and regulations that determine your status in the U.S.
ISSS is here to advise and support you and to help with a successful stay at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, we provide the information below.
J-1 Scholars at the University of Colorado Denver may engage in incidental employment, such as occasional lectures or consultations, with prior approval from ISSS. This employment must be related to their program objectives and should not delay the completion of their program. For more information or to request permission, schedule a J-1 scholar appointment with ISSS.
J-1 Exchange visitors must report any change in their residential address to International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) within 10 days. Employees should update their address in the employee portal, while non-employees need to inform the Human Resources Business Partner in their unit.
For international travel, J-1 scholars should prepare by making copies of all immigration documents and ensuring they have a valid passport, visa, and Form DS-2019 with a recent travel signature from ISSS. If your J-1 or J-2 visa will expire before re-entry, apply for a new visa unless eligible for Automatic Revalidation, which allows reentry from Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands with an expired visa under specific conditions.
J-1 scholars can be authorized to be outside the U.S. for program activities if the DS-2019 and SEVIS record remain active. For absences over 30 days, submit an Out of Country authorization request and continue to comply with program regulations, maintain updated records with ISSS, and ensure valid health insurance.
Despite state laws, the sale, possession, or use of cannabis remains illegal under federal law and can lead to severe immigration consequences, including visa denial or revocation for J-1 scholars. Avoid any involvement with cannabis and be mindful that visa applications may include social media checks and device inspections by CBP officers.
