The Department of Bioengineering is the first program of its kind in Colorado, offering students unparalleled opportunities as they learn and work on Colorado’s only academic medical campus. The combination of technical learning, immersive experiences in the clinical and biomedical enterprise beyond the classroom, and out-of-classroom opportunities to learn about cutting-edge patient care and research, is provided by only a handful of universities across the United States. Students have opportunities to learn from clinicians and engineers and to perform research or medical device design in world-class hospitals and clinical research labs.

Bioengineering is a true dual-campus department and program. Administratively, the Department of Bioengineering is within the College of Engineering, Design and Computing, located on the Downtown Campus (DC) at CU Denver. Physically, the department is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) in Aurora.

Student Testimonials

Alyssa Salazar
As a first-generation student, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started undergrad at CU Denver. I quickly found my home within the Bioengineering department and the MARC U-STAR program. The students and faculty within the Bioengineering department were extremely supportive and taught a broad range of classes that provided an extensive understanding of the field. The MARC program provided the opportunity for me to work in Dr. Jeffrey Jacot's lab, where I gained invaluable research experience. Through support from many of the faculty, including Dr. Allen Richard, Dr. Brad Smith, and Dr. Karin Payne, I gained the necessary skills and experience to successfully apply to graduate school. I am currently a PhD candidate at The Pennsylvania State University in Biomedical Engineering, where I am working on meniscus tissue engineering.

Mewael Ahmedin
The Bioengineering department really prepared me for the work life by giving me some challenging projects that pushed my ability to think critically and execute while under pressure. Juggling large projects with smaller tasks is a part of your day-to-day life as an engineer in the real world and this major really implemented that well.

Sean Hansen
Sean Hansen is a 2021 graduate of the College of Engineering, Design, and Computing. A Colorado native who grew up in Louisville, he took time to discover his passions before enrolling at CU Denver. With his interest in neuroscience—specifically neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to learn—he found success in the bioengineering program, where in 2020 he founded the BioEngineering Empowerment Program (BEEP), which will remain a lasting legacy and testament to Hansen’s undergraduate achievements. Hansen is pursuing his master’s degree at CU Denver. Citing his love of learning and education, he hopes to find his career in academia or non-profit.

Castro is a Denver native and a first-generation student. During her studies in the Bioengineering program, she spent countless hours applying for a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Research Award, one of the most prestigious academic exchange programs that provides grants for students to study research in another country. Her hard work paid off: She will spent the 2021-22 academic year conducting skin cancer research in Kraków, Poland. “As a Fulbright recipient, my goal is to serve as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. abroad while simultaneously establishing an international collaboration in the sciences,” said Castro, who earned a bachelor’s in Bioengineering from the College of Engineering, Designing and Computing. “I hope to showcase the presence of Hispanic culture in the U.S. while immersing myself in Polish culture and collaborating with scientists in Poland.”

Frequently Asked Questions

The BIOE-BS undergraduate program is a 128-credit hour program that can be completed in 4 years. Some students will stay on the Auraria campus for a third year to complete Pre-Health courses and minor coursework and extend their time of completion to 5 years.

Transfer students who have completed AA or AS degree at a community college can complete the BIOE-BS degree in 3 years.

Undergraduate students start their academics on the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver. There, students will complete 58 credits of prerequisites in math, biology, chemistry, calc-based physics, programming and bioengineering design courses and 24 hours of CU Denver Core coursework.

Once student complete the prerequisite coursework, students then move on to the Anschutz Medical Campus to complete their Junior and Seniors year.

Yes! Students can still work in a research lab at AMC if they are still completing coursework on the Auraria Campus. Students are invited to connect with BIOE faculty and learn more about their interests in bioengineering as soon as possible. This can help students focus on possible research topics for graduate school and also help students navigate the medical campus before they start taking upper-division courses.

The Bioengineering program has a BS-MS program that provides high-performing and motivated undergraduate students the opportunity to begin graduate work at the master’s level while completing the undergraduate degree in bioengineering. Students apply to our MS program in the spring semester of their junior year. Once accepted, students can take graduate-level courses during their senior year. The GRE, application and transcripts are waived, and 6 credits can apply towards the BS and MS degree. Students who are motivated to complete their research can finish their graduate degree a year after completing their undergraduate degree.
