Creating a Long-Term Culture of Security
Nov 7, 2017It has been an eventful year for cybersecurity. As citizens and companies increase their awareness, cybercriminals are leveraging both new and old avenues to steal personal data. With the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasingly more sophisticated phishing campaigns, it is getting more difficult to avoid data breaches.
Improving cybersecurity awareness is only the first step. The ultimate goal of last month’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month was to jump-start the conversation. Here are some first steps to take to protect yourself and your data:
- Device security: Encrypt your devices and use Anti-virus software such as McAfee anti-virus.
- Secure wifi networks: When on campus, log into the secure CU Denver or CU Anschutz wifi. Be careful when using wifi at coffee shops, airports and hotels. Get tips on staying secure while using public wifi.
- Beware of phishing: Learn how to spot a phishing email and report it and report it to the OIT Security and Compliance team.
