Program Overview

CU Denver’s Digital Pedagogy and New Literacies certificate equips individuals with the tools to provide an equitable, engaging, and meaningful digital education experience. It fosters dynamic, inquisitive, and forward-thinking educators capable of identifying and solving the challenges facing digital education today.

CU Denver’s Digital Pedagogy and New Literacies certificate is designed for professional-learning providers in a school or university setting (K-16). This certificate equips individuals with the tools needed to provide an equitable, engaging, and meaningful digital education experience. It fosters dynamic, inquisitive, and forward-thinking educators capable of identifying and solving the challenges facing digital education today, including issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti- racism, and the development of more student-centered design and instructional approaches.

In this certificate program you will:

  • Become competent, creative, and confident in the use of various digital media and technology in support of learning, collaboration, and communication.
  • Understand concepts and methodologies associated with new media, such as social and collaborative annotation, open educational resources, implicit/coded bias, critical digital pedagogy, etc.
  • Design learning opportunities, experiences, and programs, making best use of resources and engaging the full range of learner needs and strengths.
  • Identify your core values and develop a vision for your practice, career, or field.
  • Reflect on the qualities of educational leadership and actively seek to infuse those qualities in your work.
  • Pursue professional interests by creating and actively participating in local and global learning networks.
  • Encourage dialogues among students and educators that heighten awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that expose the hidden and visible ways technologies and institutions perpetuate marginalization.

Courses

You will complete the following courses:

  • INTE 5360 Critical Digital Pedagogy (3 credits)
  • INTE 5300 Critical Digital Literacies (3 credits)
  • Choose one:
    • INTE 5320 Games & Learning (3 credits)
    • INTE 5340 Learning with Digital Stories (3 credits)
    • INTE 5670 Crafting Synchronous Learning (3 credits)
    • INTE 5000 Maker Studio (3 credits)
  • Choose one:
    • INTE 6840 Certificate-based Practicum (3 credits)
    • INTE 6720 Research in Learning Design & Technology (3 credits)
    • INTE 6930 Student Agency / Internship

Through these courses you will have the opportunity to imagine your own outcomes according to your desired career paths and/or your areas of work or research. By following a curriculum plan that moves from foundations to application to practicum, you will invest in a specific, personalized outcome which you can trace from the start of their study to its end. To facilitate this, you’ll:

  1. Initiate your study with foundations in critical digital pedagogy and literacies.
  2. Collaborate with your faculty mentor/advisor to establish a goal for your culminating work.
  3. Continue your study with the appropriate application course.
  4. Culminate the work of the certificate by completing a practicum project, which will be reviewed by your faculty mentor as well as the instructor for your practicum course.
