Masks are now optional at CU Denver

Although we have relaxed our COVID protocols, we urge you to stay up-to-date on your vaccines, and stay home if you feel sick. Follow the self-reporting guidelines if you are sick, exposed or if you test positive.

Latest Mask Guidance

KN95 Masks Available

To help prevent the transmission of COVID via aerosols, CU Denver has a limited supply of KN95 masks — one of the most effective tools available.

You can pick up a KN95 mask at the Lynx Central Main Desk, located on the 1st floor of the Student Commons building.

Masking Importance

Masking can be a critical public health tool and it is important to remember that it can protect yourself as well as others by reducing the spread of COVID-19 aerosols.

Find more information about using masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 at the CDC website.

More details on mask guidelines

Currently, face coverings at CU Denver are optional for our community while indoors on campus. While ending our mask mandate represents a relaxation of our COVID protocols, we urge you to continue the practices that put us in position to make this decision: staying up-to-date on your vaccines, getting tested when you don’t feel well or think you may have been exposed, staying home when you’re sick, and follow CDC guidance if you test positive.

Read the Feb. 28 announcement for more information.

Masks - Frequently Asked Questions

Currently, masks are optional on campus, regardless of vaccination status. However, we highly encourage individuals to wear masks to help protect the community.

No. Beginning Monday, March 7, masks will be optional. Individuals can continue to wear a mask if they prefer. This should not be discouraged. If this results in communication problems, individuals are expected to be patient and provide opportunities for engagement.

No, beginning Monday, March 7, masks will be optional on campus. An instructor should not require everyone to wear masks to attend class. Instructors are free to wear face coverings and request social distancing (i.e. ask that students not sit in the front row). If faculty/staff members need workplace modifications because of masks being optional (i.e. requesting a larger room for additional distancing), they should contact their supervisor/chair and/or submit a request via a form on the Human Resources website.

Individuals can continue to wear a mask if they prefer. This should not be discouraged. The campus has additional KN95 masks available at the Lynx Central Main Desk located in the Student Commons building

Even with their own mask, some employees may continue to feel that because of their personal situation they need a workplace adjustment. For example, an employee who is immunocompromised or who has a high risk family member living with them may feel the need to request a change their physical work space, a change to how they engage with the public, or a request for a larger classroom to provide more space between an instructor and students.

If an employee would like to request an adjustment, we encourage that they first work with their supervisor/chair, if possible. Associate Vice Chancellor teri engelke is available to talk with supervisors on how they can support their employees and provide workplace adjustments and can be reached at teri.engelke@ucdenver.edu. Human Resources will conduct outreach and see if they can assist in finding ways to address the concerns.
