Have an idea of a topic you want us to cover?
Human beings naturally distinguish between friends and outsiders. We include and exclude. We tend to place positive emotions with friends and negative emotions with outsiders. This subconscious process is often referred to as “othering.”
Othering leads to exclusion, stereotyping, racism, and worse intergroup consequences while providing us with a sense of inclusion, belonging and safety. However, it also restricts our creativity and agency as we are being forced to conform to the norms of the group that we consider ourselves to be part of.
How does this process of “othering” work? Can we overcome it and turn it into a positive experience that facilitates social inclusion and diversity while enhancing our own sense of agency, authenticity, and creativity?
In Part 2, we will discuss group dynamics: inclusion, exclusion, and overcoming othering.
