CU Denver Sitefinity Support Change

CU Denver University Communications will now support all CU Denver Sitefinity websites.

As of 6/1/2026, ISS (IT) will no longer provide user support. This change supports the transition to CU HyperLynx and the future Drupal platform. Existing websites will continue to function as normal. Submit all help requests through the web support form:

Displaying Details of Reusable Content Types

The problem


In Sitefinity, some widgets using reusable content opens in the same page when there is a button or link to be clicked. This is a default setting. While this works for some pages, it can cause some visual issues depending on the content on your page. This can affect widgets like People, Events, Newsroom and Calendars.

 

The Example


If you have more than one of the same reusable content widgets on the page, the details of that item will duplicate for every widget instance once it is click on. For example, a site builder displaying the People widget multiple times on a page will cause the profile to display on the page several times when a specific profile is clicked. 

 

Another example is if a widget is on a page that has a lot of other content. When someone click on the items, the content will automatically display on that page along with the original page content. This could make the content look crowded. For example, an event widget on the homepage will display all the event content along with the homepage content when selected. 

The Workaround


First a child page needs to be created under the page that has the same widget.

  1. Under pages, click on the Actions menu right next to the page that has the reusable widget.
  2. Choose the option to Duplicate the page. This will make sure the new page has the same navigation and other page properties for a consistent look.
  3. When the page properties load, do the following:
    1. Rename the page to be descriptive, e.i. “widget type” followed by details. For example, if you are using the event widget, name the page “Event Details”.
    2. Under “Put this page”, click change and make this page a child of the original widget page.
    3. Uncheck “show in navigation”. This keeps the detail page hidden from browsing site visitors until needed.
    4. Click “Create and go to add content”.
  4. Now that you have a page created, keep the widget that has the content you would like to display and its settings. Keeping this widget filtered to your specific data will increase your search engine optimization (SEO).
  5. Delete any other widgets from the page.
  6. Give the page a detailed H1 title using the content block widget, e.i. "Event details" or "Faculty Profile". 
  7. Publish the page.

Now that the page is created, site builders will choose to display the details by doing the following:

 

  1. Go to the page that has the original widget content.
  2. Find the widget and click Edit.
  3. In the Single item settings tab, choose the option to open the single item in “Selected existing page…”
  4. Click select and find the page you just created.
  5. Save the changes.
  6. Repeat as necessary if the same widget is on the page multiple times.  
  7. Publish the page when ready.
