Supporting Documents by Visa Type

Department of Homeland Security has provided guidance regarding the completion of I-9s during COVID.  Please see below.

This provision only applies to employers and workplaces that are operating remotely.

The HR business partner must review documents and complete Section 2 of the I-9 per the guidance below. 

  • HR business partners must inspect the Section 2 documents remotely (e.g., over video link, fax or email, etc.) and obtain, inspect, and retain copies of the documents, within three business days for purposes of completing Section 2.
  • HR business partners  should enter “COVID-19” as the reason for the physical inspection delay in the Section 2 Additional Information field.
  • Documents that are remotely inspected will have to be physically inspected in person when the office opens for business. 
  • Once the documents have been physically inspected, the HR business partner should add the note “documents physically examined” with the date of inspection to the Section 2 Additional Information field on the Form I-9, or to section 3, as appropriate.

DHS has granted an extension of the above processes through October 31, 2022.
