Bio & Research Focus

Dr. Morris Huang is an assistant research professor at the Department of Bioengineering and multi-faceted contributor at CIDE. He received his PhD at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and his undergraduate in mechanical engineering at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Huang’s interests and background are in prototyping, test method development, and human factors, with a focus in assistive technology (AT) and clinical assessment tools. His career research goals are centered on empowering clinicians, AT manufacturers, and individuals with disabilities to make scientifically-motivated and contextually-sound decisions in AT design and prescription. This is evidenced by the 10 peer-reviewed publications he has co-authored, each addressing clinically-relevant problems related to AT. His doctoral work was focused on developing a wheelchair-propelling robotic testbed and other standardized test methods for evaluating manual wheelchair performance across different maneuvers and environmental contexts. During his tenure as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado Denver with the Center for Innovative Design and Engineering (CIDE), he added human factors and usability testing to his research portfolio, with a focus on developing guidelines to technology design for individuals with cognitive disabilities. Dr. Huang’s early career goals are to continue developing high-usability tools and methods that empower clinicians, clients, and other stakeholders to make data-driven decisions around assistive and age technology prescription and selection that optimize cost-benefit for the users and improve their quality of life.
