What is Assistive Technology for Young Children?
Assistive Technology, or AT, refers to items, devices or adaptations that enable a child with a disability to actively participate in their world.
AT can help young children play independently with toys or with other children, communicate their needs and ideas, make choices, or move around on their own.
AT covers a wide range of tools; it's not just about technology. For young children this might involve simple adaptations such as helping a child sit up by building support into their highchair with rolled up towels, or making a book easier to browse by putting spacers between the pages. It can also include more sophisticated technology such as complex communication or mobility devices.
