Device Loans Open Up New Horizons
Device loans, a primary component of the Colorado Tech Act, are one of the most impactful services we offer at CIDE.

In our winter newsletter, we shared information on the Device Demonstrations component of the Assistive Technology Act Program of Colorado (Colorado Tech Act). This legislation passed in 1989 increases access to, availability of, and connections to funding for Assistive Technology (AT). Assistive Technology is defined as any piece of equipment, device, or system used to improve or maintain the ability level of an individual with a disability---in education, employment, recreation, and daily living activities.

This article focuses on another aspect of the program: Device Loans. As a primary component of the Colorado Tech Act, SWAAAC, and Tech for Tykes, device loans are one of the most impactful services we offer at CIDE. These loans allow clinicians and providers working with individuals with disabilities to loan AT devices for a short period of time. This way, participants can try devices before purchasing, or have temporary access when their own devices may be unavailable. The goal is to help individuals find the right equipment for their needs.
In 2024, our Loan Library at CIDE collaborated with school districts, early intervention programs and clinics to make over 1500 short term AT loans to individuals with disabilities or delays. The combined savings to individuals and agencies was $1,885,623 in the 2024 fiscal year, and over 99% of borrowers were satisfied with this service. One such recipient of a loan was Edward.
Our clinic's loan program has given Edward the ability to try out multiple types of switches, motivating switch toys and activities in his home. His family has been collecting data over time with the borrowed equipment to help determine what assistive technology and access methods will best meet his needs for communication, play, and environmental control.
