Program Overview

Deepens an understanding of mathematics while illustrating how to engage middle school students in meaningful learning experiences. Applicants with a wide range of professional experiences are encouraged to take this program and become fully licensed middle school math teachers.

What you’ll learn

University of Colorado Denver’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a middle school math licensure program, will deepen your understanding of mathematics while learning how to engage students in meaningful learning experiences. Designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a variety of fields, this graduate program supports you in pursuing your dream to be a teacher. Learning from dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty in a residency program perfected and proven through almost 30 years of ongoing work with partner schools make our program – and our graduates – stand out. Upon successful completion of all components of this program, you will be ready to be a licensed middle school math teacher.

In this concentration you will:

  • Learn to plan assessment-informed math instruction for educational excellence and equity for all middle school children from diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Develop deep understanding of the diverse ways children learn math and develop within their families and communities and in schools; and gain skills to bring a relevant and engaging curriculum to your standards-based teaching. 
  • Gain the skills for effective middle school classroom organization and management.
