Bachelor of Arts in General Science, Secondary Science Education (License)

Program Overview

Equips future teachers to encourage middle and high school students to solve complex problems and use critical analysis and decision-making.

What Students Learn

Becoming a science teacher allows practitioners to encourage a curiosity for science in 7th- to 12th-grade students. Graduates help foster experiential learning and exploration within students who wish to receive a basic grounding in science. This in-demand profession is extremely important. Graduates of the program inspire students to learn, question, observe, analyze, explain, and draw conclusions about the world around them. In this four-year, 138-credit hour program, students learn to plan assessment-informed instruction for educational excellence and equity for all children including those from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, class and ability backgrounds.
 
Preparing science teachers is a collaborative process between the science education department in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the School of Education & Human Development at CU Denver as well as experienced K-12 partner educators in the metro area.
 
In this teacher education program, students learn from internationally recognized faculty members known for innovation and research in STEM education, social and emotional growth, and building a diverse teacher workforce. This department regularly works on prestigious National Science Foundation grants, involving students often. Students garner the essential content and education theory needed to be effective science teachers. Through partnerships, students "live the life of a teacher," becoming vital members of staff as teacher candidates.
 
Students may be starting college for the first time, transferring from another institution, or returning to the university setting after years away. Regardless, students join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare them for success in any classroom.
 
Any school can promise a teacher residency. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared. For more than 25 years, this program has partnered with area schools to create a residency program that supports development as students work with teams of practicing teachers, leaders, and faculty. Due to CU Denver's urban location and emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any classroom.

Courses

To earn this 136 credit hour degree students must satisfy all requirements in each of the four areas below. Students should declare their track as early as possible to avoid taking classes that do not count toward their degree or licensure. Please reach out to a CLAS advisor as soon as possible to indicate interest and to plan the course schedule.
