Designed to enhance your academic and career options, CU Denver’s minor in Human Development and Family Relations prepares undergraduate students to serve culturally and linguistically diverse families and individuals in a variety of community and social service settings.

What you'll learn

Designed to enhance your academic and career options, CU Denver's minor in Human Development and Family Relations prepares undergraduate students to view culturally and linguistically diverse families from a strengths-based perspective and to serve them in a variety of community and social service settings.

This minor provides a strong foundation for students who wish to go to law school for child and family law, medical school for pediatrics or family medicine, social work, graduate school or counseling education. It is offered in on-campus, hybrid and online formats.

This minor pairs nicely with a range of majors including but not limited to: Communications, Criminal Justice, Education, Ethnic Studies, Nursing, Political Science, Public Health, Psychology, Spanish, Sociology and other Humanities and Social Sciences majors. For students considering a teaching career, our classes address many issues facing families today and are an excellent addition to the education curriculum.

The University of Colorado Denver offers on-campus and hybrid versions of the Human Development and Family Relations minor. We foster a closely knit, dedicated community of students, each of whom is mentored by professors who care. We walk alongside you from the first class to the last, supporting you each step of the way.

Our students may choose from the following concentrations or create a unique blend of minor courses:

  • Bilingual (Spanish) Family and Community Services
  • Family Gerontology
  • Pre-Higher Education and Student Affairs
  • Leadership and Community-based Organizations
  • Pre-individual, Couple and Family Therapy/Counseling
  • Additional options: Students may enroll in courses in the program areas listed below. For additional information, please contact the advisor or program leader.
    • Early Childhood Education
    • Educational Foundations
    • Literacy Education

Minor Requirements

A minimum of 15 credit hours of the courses linked in the course catalog below, with grade C or better, is required to minor in HDFR. At least nine credit hours must be completed at CU Denver.
