CANCER RESEARCH IN DENVER, COLORADO
Fulbright Visiting Post Doctoral Scholar Nir Peled, MD, PhD, conducted research under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Fred Hirsch, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. His research focused on the “Exhaled Breath Markers for Early Detection of Lung Cancer” and other projects in the Lung SPORE program. Peled also observed clinical activities in the lung cancer clinic with Dr. Paul Bunn Jr. and in the pulmonary clinic with Dr. York Miller. Peled is a Senior Pulmonology and Medical Oncology Resident at the Davidoff Cancer Center, Rabin Medical Center, Petach Tiqwa, Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Te Aviv University in Tel Aviv, Israel.
In February 2009, Denver's Channel 9 News featured Peled in a newscast that focused on cancer research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. Peled and an international team of oncologists had been working on a device with the goal of detecting cancer at a earlier stages. Using this device, screening for the presence of cancer would be minimized to exhaling into a bag that is analyzed through a chromatography; this avoids unnecessary biopsies and surgeries. Peled worked with fellow researchers at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and he was part of the research team that developed the device at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel.
Peled authored two review papers and three book chapters with Paul Bunn and his mentor Fred Hirsch. He received the prestigious “Young Investigator Award” from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer”.
“I am proud to be part of a professional community that engages in cutting edge research while creating a wonderful atmosphere.”
