CU Denver ID Badging and Security

Visible ID Badge Initiative

Your safety on campus is our top priority and we want to ensure security for our people and property. To that end, our visible ID badge initiative requires that all students, faculty, and staff display their CU Denver ID badges when on campus. Visible badges increase safety by helping security guards and other community members identify who is part of our CU Denver community.

When you are on campus, you are required to visibly display your ID badge. There is no mandate about how you display your badge. We just ask that it be visible. You can wear it around your neck using a lanyard and ID holder (contact your department for a lanyard and ID holder) or clipped to your clothes with a retractable badge holder. Departments may contact Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Engagement Sarah Buller, sarah.buller@ucdenver.edu, for lanyards and card holders.

Please do not punch holes through the ID badge itself, as it will damage your badge and could restrict your access to campus resources. See our list of FAQs for information about the initiative, steps to getting an ID badge, and more.

We are asking that all CU Denver students, faculty and staff wear their university ID badge when on campus. The initiative began more than a year ago in response to security concerns and has been implemented in phases, starting with the CU Denver Building, Business School, and Lawrence Street Center. Now, the initiative has expanded to all campus buildings.

Wearing an ID badge supports safety and security on campus and offers a sense of community among our Lynx.

Yes. The process for after-hours access will not change.

Please work with your department if you forget your ID badge. We understand that this is a change and there will inevitably be times when you might forget. Please make a note to remind yourself to keep your ID badge in your purse, pocket or backpack so that it is always nearby to wear visibly when on campus. Pretty soon, wearing your ID badge will be just as much a habit as putting clothes on in the morning.

The Badging Office located in the Tivoli Student Union processes ID badges using the ID Authorization/Charge Form located on the ID Station site. To update your ID badge to your preferred name, complete a new form with appropriate authorization from your department and bring your form to the ID office for your new ID badge. If your ID card is damaged or your name has changed, you must turn in your original ID card at the ID Station and you can get a new ID card for $12. A replacement ID badge costs $24.

To ensure that your building or lab access is not impacted by your name change, make sure your department is aware of this ID badge change so they know to update your name in AHEC’s databases. Additionally, make your preferred name official by adding it to your profile in the employee portal.

 For faculty:

  1. Login into the UCD Access portal

  2. From the landing page, select the “CU Resources Home” drop-down menu > “My Info and Pay” > “My Info”

  3. Select “Name” from the left navigation

  4. Click on your name in the “Personal Details” window > enter your preferred name in the “Preferred First Name” field > click “Save”

Departments are expected to provide arrival guidance to their visitors and issue a visitor’s badge/sticker. A CU Denver action team is working to address visitor flow and process.

Building and elevator access will require an ID badge beginning Monday, January 16, 2023.
