CU Denver ID Badging and Security

We are asking that all CU Denver students, faculty and staff wear their university ID badge when on campus. The initiative began more than a year ago in response to security concerns and has been implemented in phases, starting with the CU Denver Building, Business School, and Lawrence Street Center. Now, the initiative has expanded to all campus buildings. 

Throughout the process we have kept the importance of protecting the privacy of our community in the forefront. The consensus amongst students, faculty, and staff, is that information on the campus IDs provide name, ID number, photo, and affiliation type (student, faculty, staff), and that this information does not violate privacy or put anyone at risk. This information is different than sensitive information such as date of birth, address, phone number, etc., which we will continue to protect and limit in our practice to use the least amount of personal information required to fulfill the institutional duties and responsibilities. 

The visible ID badge initiative was in response to a growing call from students, faculty, and staff, requesting that visible ID badging and badge access be a top priority when returning to campus, post pandemic. Throughout the process we have diligently sought feedback from our Lynx community by way of various platforms, including surveys, town halls, and panel discussions. A key takeaway from these initiatives is that our campus community has agreed that visible badge wearing would make our community feel safer and foster a positive Lynx community environment. Another common response received from our community is a request to expand the access control into the buildings and within the buildings. The access control request can only be achieved once visible ID badge wearing is implemented across CU Denver.  

Benefits of visible ID badges includes:

Enhanced Security: Visibly wearing ID badges assists students, faculty, and staff in identifying other members of our Lynx community. Additionally, if an incident occurs on campus, visible ID badge wearing will assist faculty, staff, and first responders in providing resources and supporting reunification efforts. 

Fostering Personal Connections: Visible ID badge wearing encourages students, faculty, and staff to learn names and build connections. Visible ID Badge wearing has been successful across the nation in fostering a sense of belonging and minimizing the feeling that you are just a number. 

Enhanced Access Capabilities: During the height of the pandemic, many of our academic and service support buildings across campus, including Auraria Higher Education Center, required visible badging to enter the buildings and receive services. This enhancement has been adopted post pandemic as students, faculty, and staff have returned to campus. Visible ID badge wearing assists in streamlining access to spaces and services such as the Salazar Student Wellness Center, Tivoli Book Store, Auraria Library, and special events hosted on campus. 

Community Enforcement: As we continue to practice visible ID badge wearing, we are encouraging members of our campus community to engage in thoughtful encouragement in reminding our students, faculty and staff to wear their badges. This will also help our campus community when we move closer to building badge access as access will be impacted. 

Yes. The process for after-hours access will not change.

The Badging Office located in the Tivoli Student Union processes ID badges using the ID Authorization/Charge Form located on the ID Station site. To update your ID badge to your preferred name, complete a new form with appropriate authorization from your department and bring your form to the ID office for your new ID badge. If your ID card is damaged or your name has changed, you must turn in your original ID card at the ID Station and you can get a new ID card for $12. A replacement ID badge costs $24.  

To ensure that your building or lab access is not impacted by your name change, make sure your department is aware of this ID badge change so they know to update your name in AHEC’s databases. Additionally, make your preferred name official by adding it to your profile in the employee portal.  

 For faculty: 

1.     Login into the UCD Access portal

2.     From the landing page, select the “CU Resources Home” drop-down menu > “My Info and Pay” > “My Info” 

3.     Select “Name” from the left navigation

4.     Click on your name in the “Personal Details” window > enter your preferred name in the “Preferred First Name” field > click “Save”   

Departments, schools and colleges are expected to provide arrival guidance to their visitors and issue a visitor’s badge/sticker.

Building and elevator access will require an ID badge beginning Monday, January 16, 2023.
