Visible Badge Initiative

Your safety is our top priority on campus and we want to ensure security for our people and property. To that end, CU Denver's visible badge initiative requires that all students, faculty, and staff to display their campus ID badges when entering the CU Denver Building and the Business School building (located at the intersections of 14th and 15th & Lawrence streets, respectively). The impetus for this pilot project has been a recent uptick in theft and unauthorized individuals entering campus buildings. This new initiative, which may be later extended to other buildings, will help security guards and other community members identify who is authorized to be on our campus.

There is no mandate about how you display your badge – we just ask that it be visible. You can wear it around your neck using a lanyard and ID holder – you can get a CU Denver lanyard from programs in the CU Denver Building and the Dean's office on the 4th floor of the Business School – or clipped to your clothes with a retractable badge holder.

Please do not punch holes through the badge itself, as it will damage your badge and could impede your access to campus resources. This webpage includes information about the pilot, steps to getting a badge, and more. Refer to the frequently asked questions below for more information.

Thank you for your support of this important step toward strengthening safety and security on the CU Denver campus.

We are asking that all CU Denver students, faculty and staff who enter the Business School and CU Denver Building have their CU Denver identification badge displayed and visible on their person. This was a collaborative decision that engaged frequent users and leaders of the Business School and CU Denver Building.

While off-campus during the COVID-19 crisis, multiple security issues were reported, negatively impacting our community’s sense of safety and security. Our ask for everyone to visibly wear badges in the Business School and CU Denver Building is aimed at increasing safety and addressing issues of security.

We are offering a grace period for the first 6 weeks of the semester for those that forget or do not yet have a badge. During this initial period, we ask that you visit the Auraria ID Station at Tivoli to obtain a badge if you do not yet have one. We understand that this is a change and there will inevitably be times when you might forget your badge. Please make a note to remind yourself to keep your badge in your purse, pocket or backpack so that it is always nearby to wear visibly when on campus. Pretty soon, wearing your badge will be just as much a habit as putting clothes on in the morning!

There is no impact to your current badging access. Please continue to use your badge the same way for access to campus resources.

You must go to the Auraria campus ID Station at Tivoli to get your badge (across from the front entrance to the book store). Contact your department administrator for your department’s process for activation – whether the department manages activation or whether you must present your badge in the Facilities office in the Lawrence Street Center at 1380 Lawrence Street, Suite 360. Learn more.

You must go to the Auraria campus ID Station to get a replacement badge and activate your new badge. To activate, please contact your department administrators. You may need to present your new badge at the Lawrence Street Center Facilities office, just as though you are getting a new badge. There is a fee for lost, stolen or damaged badges. Please check with your department as to whether you are responsible to pay out-of-pocket for a replacement badge. Learn more.

For students, badges are paid for as part of student fees. Faculty and staff must pay $24, typically paid by the department via speedtype. Refer to the AHEC ID Station page for additional information about costs.

There is no mandate about how you display your badge – we just ask that it be visible. You can wear it around your neck using a lanyard and ID holder – check with your department for where you can get a CU Denver lanyard and badge holder, or have fun and select your own favorite – or clipped to your clothes with a retractable badge holder. Important! Please use a vinyl badge holder envelope and do not punch a hole through the card to attach it to your badge holder. Doing so will damage your card and you may be responsible to the replacement costs of a new one.

You are not expected to be “the badge police.” If you are uncomfortable with giving a gentle reminder to non-badge-wearers, please let building staff or faculty know that you are seeing people not displaying their badges. If you are comfortable asking people to wear their badge, please provide a respectful nudge. Together, let’s do our best to encourage one to support safety and wear our badges during this transition.

Yes. The process for after-hours access to the Business School and CU Denver Building will not change.

Please inform your visitor that they must follow all current campus COVID-19 protocols, including completing the attestation application and wearing a mask indoors. Departments are expected to provide the necessary arrival contact information to their visitors and issue a visitors badge/sticker upon arrival. The receiving department is responsible for ensuring the appropriate attestation has been completed. We appreciate your willingness to help navigate this process.

A CU Denver action team is working to address visitor flow and process.

Please contact the Facilities Customer Service Center at downtown.access@ucdenver.edu or (303) 724-1777.

  • Any students who have not obtained their badge and are enrolled as of January 2020 will not be assessed a fee. A fee will be assessed if a student has obtained a badge and needs a replacement.
  • Free lanyards are available from the Dean’s Office, 6th floor of the Business School building, until they run out.
