CONSULTING ON MASTER’S PROGRAM IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO
Maria (Mia) Thomas-Ruzic, senior instructor at the School of Education and Human Development, received a Fulbright Scholar award in TEFL to teach English-as-a-foreign-language teacher education and sociolinguistics at Benemérita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP) in Puebla, Mexico. She consulted on the new MA program in English language teaching (Maestria en la ensenanza de inglès) and served on MA and doctoral committees.
In 2007, Thomas-Ruzic forged an institutional partnership through a signed memorandum agreement between CU Denver and the BUAP, facilitating teacher and faculty exchanges and collaborative research. Joint projects with colleagues in Puebla, Mexico continue, with a new focus initiated in 2009 on making opportunities and resources at the University of Colorado Denver available to students and colleagues from the BUAP.
“Professionally and personally, my Fulbright stay in Mexico was invaluable. I gained a deeper understanding of the North-South dynamic and the importance of reciprocity between the United States and Mexico. I fell in love with the place and the people. My experiences helped open up avenues of exchange between students and colleagues at CU Denver and at my Mexican host institution."
