IRISH MUSICAL VOICES: TRADITIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE VOCAL EXPRESSIONS IN PEDAGOGY AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICE
Through a Fulbright grant, Judith Coe, associate professor and chair of music, had the opporunity to travel throughout Ireland to conduct interviews with students and faculty, observe regional pedagogies and singing styles, and create music with Irish musicians. Her host base was at the University of Limerick in the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance (IWA). Coe's research project explored alternative expressions in Irish music and song. She examined sean-nós (Irish traditional “old-style’) singing and pedagogy, and investigated how these traditions inform and transform other musical genres, including the creative work of emerging pop musicians and singer/songwriters, electronic and experimental musicians, and classical/cross-over genres.
“Most amazing year of my life, absolutely transformative.”
