The following is a list of training programs for prospective and current students as well as a few for educators or prospective educators to improve their skills or continue their learning in a new field.  The programs are accompanied by a description and any available website or contact information.  Feel free to contact us to add to the list.


Career Center

Help students and alumni find a job or get assistance with everything job-related, from resume writing to interviewing skills.  Career center also helps students with career assessments and career counseling.  Works with outside employers to give them access to our students and alumni.  


Center for Continuing Education and Professional Learning

The center coordinates all professional development and continuing education initiatives, across all academic programs and professional development programs/centers in the School of Education. The center has a lead role in the ongoing preparation of professionals who work in diverse schools, agencies, and related settingsvia partnerships between those settings and the school.


Center for Faculty Development

Center focuses on advancing faculty careers and helping improve faculty’s ability to increase learning in their courses. Center helps faculty to improve classroom teaching, Improve tests, Integrate active learning strategies, and convert to or improve an online class.  The Center has a tenure-track faculty mentoring program, offers workshops and seminars to help improve classroom practices, and partners with other programs (e.g., Denver Transfer Initiative, Office of International Education) to improve student learning outcomes.


Center for Transforming Learning and Teaching

The Center for Transforming Learning and Teaching (CTLT) was established as an initiative within the School of Education & Human Development at UC Denver in 2003. Today, the Center works with educators across the US to catalyze and co-create the transformation of learning environments through the use of assessment so that all are engaged in learning and empowered to positively contribute in a global society. We pursue our mission by: Creating and providing professional learning experiences to K-12 educators that support effective use of assessment strategies and tools; Coaching and embedding the use of assessment as a support for learning within classroom settings; Planning, developing and facilitating professional learning communities; Developing, supporting and bringing forward models of practice; Convening practitioners to bring out the best thinking; and engaging educators at the intersection of theory and practice.


Culturally Responsive Urban Education

The Center for Culturally Responsive Urban Education (CRUE) is committed to developing the capacity of educators and school systems in Colorado to meet the needs of culturally, linguistically and economically diverse urban students by preparing school personnel in culturally responsive pedagogy and practice, and pursuing a research agenda that guides improvements in our work.


Denver Writing Project

The Denver Writing Project serves teachers from all disciplines and grade levels in the Denver area and throughout much of Colorado.  With over 150 members and teacher consultants, DWP offers professional development sessions in many local schools.  As a participating site of the National Writing Project, DWP is actively involved in several national networks, which help spread best practices around Colorado including the ELL Network, Technology Network, and Urban Sites Network. DWP hosts a young writer’s camp as well as a Summer Institute for teachers to improve their own writing and their writing practices in the classroom.


English Language Acquisition

CU Denver's Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement program is designed for currently licensed teachers seeking career advancement and the knowledge and tools needed to work more effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse groups of students. The endorsement was developed in 2001 when SEHD completed work with the DPS ELA department to develop 150 clock hours of ELA in-service modules and to align them with graduate course work leading to a state endorsement for Linguistically Diverse Education.  In fall of 2007, SEHD faculty, assumed full responsibility for court-mandated courses for all teachers working with English language learners.  Beginning in the 2007-08 school year, approximately 600 teachers take courses each semester in language and literacy teaching methods, language acquisition, and the legal, historical and cultural foundations of English language education.  A five-year federal grant is supporting deeper work at several schools and is described in the research section of this document. 


Facilitating Elementary Achievement through Science (FEATS)

FEATS is a research-based initiative from San Diego State University provided by the Front Range BOCES through a contract with CDE.  The training supports elementary students in writing about their inquiry and learning from standards-based, hands-on science experiments.  Teachers learn to guide students to write in science notebooks about their inquiry and learning as opposed to “what they did.” 


Front Range BOCES:

The Front Range BOCES (Board of Education Cooperative Educational Services) is  supported by the School of Education & Human Development along with dues from the 19 metro area school districts.  Front Range BOCES provides professional learning and continuous improvement services to improve student achievement in the 19 member districts.
Examples of BOCES projects are below:

Cadreis a Front Range BOCES project funded through the Colorado Department of Education. Cadre coaches are assisting Schenck Elementary in spring 2008 with school improvement planning through professional learning and support. This includes learning about data driven dialogue, the use of data to improve instruction, short and long range planning, and helping the leadership team learn coaching skills to support teachers.


IGERT: Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Grant

CU Denver received a prestigious $3.2M Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant from the National Science Foundation to develop an innovative inter-disciplinary graduate program on sustainable urban infrastructure. The award supports 26 doctoral students during the five-year grant period from 2007-2012. The graduate program, the first of its kind in the country for its breadth across disciplines, spans the Colleges of Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Public Affairs, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.


Mentoring Institute for Latino Leaders

The mission of the Mentoring Institute for Latino Leaders is to recruit and prepare Latino educators for leadership positions. The goal is to increase the number of Latino educators in leadership positions in school districts. The Mentoring Institute for Latino Leaders project, directed by volunteer Latino public school administrators, has partnered from its inception with the School of Education and Human Development to recruit Latinos into the principal preparation program and into the doctoral program.


Northeast Front Range MSP

This 3-year project brings middle and high school teachers together with university faculty to discuss issues related to secondary and post-secondary articulation.


NOYCE Math and Science Teacher Leadership Program

A two year math and science leadership program for Mapleton Public School middle and high school teachers.


The PAR2A Center

The PAR²A Center was formed as a national research and development center to explore training systems for paraeducators and their impact on paraeducator employment conditions and student achievement. The Center houses a variety of projects funded from national, state and local sources. These projects consider policies and practices regarding the employment of paraeducators in regular education, special education, English language acquisition, Title I programs, and early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities. The PAR²A Center has also developed and field tested training for teachers and administrators in the supervision of paraeducators. The Paraeducator Supervision Academy (PSA) has been delivered in 32 states and in the US Department of Defense Schools. The Center has also conducted research on career pathways for paraeducators into educational professions. The PAR²A Center works collaboratively with local education agencies, institutions of higher education and the state education agencies to seek solutions to the ongoing challenges of paraeducator employment, career development and training.

Two funded projects from the U.S. Department of Education have provided tuition-free college courses to paraeducators called CO-TOP Academies. CO-TOP Academies are a set of undergraduate courses in one-credit hour increments to ease paraeducators who have never taken college classes into college level work.  All CO-TOP Academies offered to DPS paraeducators are taught by DPS teachers who have been trained by the PAR2A Center to deliver the CO-TOP curriculum. The curriculum consists of research-based instructional techniques and practices that clarify the distinction between teachers and paraeducators.


Professional Development Schools

Professional development schools (PDSs) are designed to support four functions: the preparation of new teachers, the professional development of teachers in the school and university professors, the renewal of curriculum and instruction at the school and university, and research and inquiry about problems of practice in the school or partnership. The School of Education & Human Development has 27 professional development schools (PDSs) in seven districts, including four schools in Aurora Public Schools.  The program is nationally recognized for having one of the most innovative, collaborative teacher preparation models where top faculty work side by side with experienced K-12 partner educators to have a profound impact on the lives of students in our most urban and diverse schools. The motto of “live the life of a teacher” from day one displays how teacher candidates become vital members of the teaching staff at one of our metro area urban partner schools while they simultaneously take university classes. Adams 14: Alsup Elementary, Rose Hill Elementary, Central Elementary, Adams City Middle, Adams City HS. Aurora Public Schools: Montview Elementary, Vassar Elementary South Middle, Central HS. Denver Public Schools: Cole ECE-8 School, Edison Elementary, Goldrick Elementary, Park Hill ECE-8, Montebello HS.  Jefferson County School District: Ryan Elementary, Thomson Elementary, Drake Middle, Arvada West HS. Mapleton School District: Adventure Elementary, Enrichment Elementary, Clayton Partnership School, Global Leadership Academy.  Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning. 


Professional Learning Access in Science and Mathematics through Internet Deliver(PLASMID)

This grant will utilize the coursework of the Rocky Mountain Middle School Math and Science Partnership and the online infrastructure of Colorado Online Learning to deliver a high quality middle school math and/or science certification program to teachers across Colorado.  This grant partners with 11 rural school districts and began offering courses on-line in Spring 2008.


Rocky Mountain Math Teacher’s Circle



The Rocky Mountain Math Teacher’s Circle is for middle-level math teachers who would like to focus on improving teachers' mathematical problem solving.  Our local chapter began in 2009 in partnership with the St. Vrain Valley School District, and is part of a national network of Math Teachers' Circles loosely organized through the American Institute of Mathematics.  We have now expanded to include teachers from any district, and while most participating teachers are from the Denver Metro area, we do have participants come from as far away as Aspen and Ft. Collins.  We hold a one-week summer immersion workshop in which a variety of mathematicians, statisticians, and teachers facilitate mathematical problem solving sessions for participants.  In addition, academic year sessions are held on Saturday mornings approximately once per month.  Graduate Credit or Continuing Education Units are available to participants. 

Scholars for Knowledge in Learning and Leadership (SKILL) Mathematics Science

Partnership Contact:

The Scholars for Knowledge in Learning and Leadership Mathematics Science Partnership (SKILLS) is a partnership between the UCD downtown campus, Denver Public Schools and the UCD Anschutz campus.  This 3 year program is funded by the Colorado Department of Education and provides middle school science teachers with summer internship opportunities in laboratories at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCD Anschutz) in order to increase their scientific knowledge base, develop instructional strategies for use in the classroom and provide hands-on experience in inquiry-based research.  In addition, the proposal is designed to foster stewardship and improve communication skills of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through active participation in the teacher-scientist partnership, serving as experienced instructors for the teachers in the laboratory setting.

The School of Education & Human Development offers a range of degree options for students who are pursuing a career in Education.  These degrees include a  BA, MA, Ed.S, Ed.d, Ph.D, Licensures and Endorsements, and Continuing Education.




STEMapalooza features over 100 exhibitors from around the state of Colorado that support Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math programs for students and educators and employ hundreds of thousands of jobs in STEM related careers. The goal of STEMapalooza is to bring industry, educational institutions and organizations together to: Create urgency and enthusiasm about the need for continuous and rigorous STEM education focused on the needs of the economy, develop awareness of opportunities in STEM education in Colorado, engage policymakers and the media in the STEM conversation, develop networks and partnerships among STEM providers, connect employers and job seekers with the thousands of available jobs/internships/externships that utilize STEM education and skills, highlight successes and generate a forum for sharing STEM practices across stakeholder groups, take responsibility for improving competitiveness in the international arena of STEM education.


Teach for America

The School of Education & Human Development has worked with TFA to craft master’s degree options for TFA teachers in the Denver Public School District.  The first cohort of over 30 TFA members began the master’s program in fall 2008.
