Montview Math and Health Sciences Elementary has been a Teacher Education Professional Development School for ten years. It is also now in partnership with the Anschutz Medical Campus here in Aurora.
The teaching and support staff here share common goals and understandings about student learning, including the Teaching-Learning Cycle, Conditions for Learning based on the work of Brian Cambourne, Kathy Richardson math and expertise in Second Language Acquisition. Every Wednesday the staff works together for staff development, focusing particularly on achieving the School Improvement Goals for all students in all grade levels. Teacher Candidates may also participate in Literacy Academy and Math Academy, professional development built into the regular teaching day. Montview is also a school that practices Collaborative Coaching & Learning (CCL), where the emphasis is on providing opportunities for teachers to share expertise together through the mutual study and analysis of shared teaching practices.
Over 80% of our students speak a language other than English. Our students demonstrate strong academic growth, especially in math. Student achievement, parental involvement and a safe school environment are all important priorities at Montview.
Teacher candidates who have completed their internships here at Montview are eagerly sought out by principals from other schools in Aurora. Many of the past Montview teacher candidates have also gone on to become teachers of demonstration classrooms, building math and literacy coaches, as well as district level math and literacy coaches. Montview has a strong reputation for preparing teacher candidates with a depth of background information and skilled practices in assessment and instruction for math, literacy and second language acquisition.
