Principal: Wes Paxton,
Site Coordinator: Barbara Remund,
UC Denver Site Professors: Bonnie Utley,

Welcome to Adams City High School! This year you have two site professors: Tom Fitzpatrick ("Fitz") and Stevi Quate. We provide support to Teacher Candidates from the Teacher Education Program at the University of Colorado Denver during their internship progression. Teacher Candidates who complete internships at ACHS work in collaboration with a cadre of Clinical Teachers and others who give generously of their time to prepare the next generation of teachers.

Principal Wes Paxton is an innovative leader who is committed to the students at our high school. He has high expectations for all of the students and teachers and is passionate that students receive the best education possible. During the time he has been principal, the culture of the high school has changed to one that is personable, caring, and collaborative. Along with valuing teacher collaboration, he also values collaboration with the community. As a result, ACHS has developed partnerships with Goodwill, Commerce City Fire Department, and many colleges and universities.

ACHS is in an interesting position this year. It's the last year in its current building. With the passage of a $78 million bond issue for ACSD 14 in November of 2006 a new high school/community college is being built to replace our current Adams City High School. Next year the school moves to the new, state-of-the-art school. Students will choose from four academies within the school: Early College (with Career and Technical Education), the Arts, Science and Technology, and a proposed International Baccalaureate academy.

ACHS has many exemplary programs including AVID and ROTC. ACHS also has a wonderful career and tech center where students can learn skills for the construction trades, public safety, hospitality, agriculture and business administration. The music program, especially the mariachi band, and the other arts play a strong role in the school and community.

A highlight during your internship experience at ACMS will be the variety of supports that are provided for Teacher Candidates including site seminars that supplement on-campus elements of the Teacher Education program. The seminars and your other experiences will bridge theory and practice. We also work with teacher cadets, a unique program for high school students who plan on becoming teachers. It's not uncommon for Teacher Candidates from our program to become full-time teachers, so they too are a great resource for current Teacher Candidates.

The biggest challenge you'll face at ACHS is the transition from an old building to a new one. The long time use of this building is obvious and the decay of the facility is serious. However, next year students and teachers will be pleased moving into the brand new, beautiful building.

Welcome to ACHS. We are happy to have you learning with us and hope you enjoy your time here.
