The Laboratory for Educational Assessment, Research and InnovatioN (LEARN) exists to advance a fundamental understanding and applied use of assessment in the improvement of education, particularly in diverse and urban contexts. We focus on the development, evaluation and use of educational assessment and its impact on instruction and learning in diverse contexts. The lab’s research seeks to inform practice, methods, policy and theory. We acknowledge that the linkage between research and the improvement of education is sometimes not straightforward. That is, some research has an immediate practical payoff; while the impact for other research is more distant. LEARN addresses both types of research and draws upon the expertise of the faculty at the UC Denver School of Education & Human Development to meet the following primary objectives:
- Conduct research on assessment and evaluation as it relates to instruction and learning, primarily in science and mathematics.
- Serve local, state and national educational organizations on issues related to assessment and research and their impact on instruction and learning by providing technical assistance and professional learning opportunities to local agencies
- Developing technically sound assessment tools and instruments for educational uses, and influencing the development of public policies related to the use of assessment and evaluation information in educational contexts
- Support the development of doctoral students within the School of Education & Human Development to become leaders in research on assessment and evaluation.
