Teaching License in Special Education Generalist

Are you seeking the training and professional development you need to work as a general special education teacher? If so, our Special Education Generalist licensure program may a great option for you. As you know, the need for highly-qualified special education teachers is on the rise. And, there are few careers that are as rewarding, demanding, exhilarating and challenging.

At the University of Colorado Denver, our outstanding faculty will strengthen your ability to advocate for the growing number of students who need special education services. We emphasize inclusive practices that honor diversity and support differentiated educational programs to meet the needs of all learners.

Your courses will focus on developing instructional expertise, collaborative problem-solving, proactive behavior supports, individualized education plans, assessments, and more. Preparing teachers is a highly collaborative process between the School of Education & Human Development at CU Denver as well as our highly experienced K-12 partner educators in the metro area. In this program, you will begin "living the life of a teacher" as you quickly become a vital member of the teaching staff at one of our metro area urban professional development schools as a teacher candidate intern.

The amount of time you will need to complete our initial licensure special education program varies based on your individual needs. Earning your license through the Graduate Urban Community Teacher Education program at CU Denver also provides a direct pathway to completing your master's degree in education. Licensure courses count towards an MA degree in many areas including special education. Most teacher candidates complete their licensure courses anywhere between 15-36 months, secure their first teaching job, and then continue with us on a part-time basis while teaching to complete the few remaining MA courses.

We select our Urban Community Teacher Education students very carefully. After you apply to the Urban Community Teacher Education program, we will contact you via e-mail about an in-person group interview. This interview process allows university faculty, as well as professors in our professional development schools, an important opportunity to assess the holistic potential of our applicants.

If you are admitted to the School after the group interview, we will require you to attend a new student orientation prior to registration. You will receive notification of the orientation by e-mail.

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. Student for Equity and Justice in Education (SEJE) is a student organization focused on engaging in the issues facing urban education. SEJE seeks memebers who are interested in working in urban and diverse schools to creat equitable systems of education and to promote social justice through community collaboration and youth empowerment. Our teacher candidates are highly sought out by districts as our teacher preparation program has a strong reputation in the Denver Metro area and beyond. School administrators describe our teacher candidates as looking like "2nd and 3rd year teachers" coming right out of this program. We prepare to be a highly effective and compassionate teacher, especially for urban and diverse elementary, middle or high school classrooms or wherever you choose to begin your career.
