Lecture Overview
The talk will discuss the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an initiative for transcontinental infrastructure construction conceptualized in China and under implementation in over 70 countries. The BRI primarily promotes the building of physical infrastructure that will connect the partner country globally.

Despite its needs-based approach, the BRI has been widely criticized for creating undesirable effects, such as increasing partner countries’ economic dependence on China through debt-trap lending. In the talk, we will identify and explain what is different about the BRI, the evidence that is available on the impacts of the BRI and the implications for policymakers.

Dr. Rafiq Dossani
Dr. Rafiq Dossani is director of the RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy, a senior economist at the RAND Corporation, and a professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. He works on education, finance, regional development, security, trade, and technology issues. Recent projects include academic medical center design in China, the Belt and Road Initiative, blended delivery models in higher education, security in the Korean Peninsula, smart city development in China, studies of Taiwan's security and prosperity, trade relations in Asia, and the use of artificial intelligence in elder home health care in Taiwan.
