Welcome to the College of Arts & Media (CAM) at CU Denver!

The writer, educator and creator Paulo Freire wrote, “The teacher is of course an artist, but being an artist
does not mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What the educator does in
teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.” This quotation is the essence of CAM.

As innovators in creative industries education and practice, the entire community of the College of Arts &
Media takes the principles and responsibilities very seriously, of being a vibrant and relevant community. We
do this by envisioning a world made smaller, and more fully human, by the artist’s interpretation of the human experience.

You will find that our faculty are prepared to provide the vital first-stage support to foster individual creative
self-awareness, expression, and personal growth and to inspire and motivate all of you (our students) to reach out and explore the potential of emerging areas of public consciousness. So, in CAM recognize the essential context and opportunities of these challenging times. Operating in an international health crisis, and being anti-racist provides the pathways for us all to advance learning and creativity at the intersection of arts, technology and commerce. By recognizing our accountabilities, we will begin to realize our mission to effect change by preparing students to successfully pursue their passions.

Students, please join us in continuing to examine and challenge the cultural and social barriers where we
encounter them, to record through your art the vibrant dynamics of our society, and to recognize your own
accountability as active and necessary contributors to this culture. We look forward to supporting you in
finding your own voice and (in the words of Freire) to become yourself.

On August 17th, you will be joining us in increasing the visibility of our creative actions and accomplishments, as we place more emphasis upon the sort of unique, interdisciplinary collaborations that establish enabling mechanisms for wider public access to culture and the arts. We will do that through creative excellence, discovery and leveraging the power of Denver as an entrepreneurial, technological and creative hub.

As individual artists, we leave but a footprint.

Together we create monuments.
