Chancellor's Communiqué

Campus Safety Resources, 11-28-2016

Dear CU Denver campus community,

In the wake of the recent incident at Ohio State University, I want to reiterate that the safety of our students, faculty and staff is our foremost priority. At times like this, it can seem that campuses -- and any public location -- are locations where violence can occur. These types of incidents may impact individuals differently and I want to make sure that you are aware of the resources available, from becoming more prepared and educated to behavioral health support.

Reporting unusual behavior

We all play an important role in keeping each other safe. We encourage the “if you see something, say something” approach. Here are some contacts and resources for reporting unusual or concerning behavior:

  • Report any suspicious behavior to the AHEC Police Department: 911 from a campus phone, from a cell phone Text-a-Tip at 720-593-TIPS (8477) or contact the Auraria Campus Police Department at 303-556-5000. It’s a good idea to program these numbers into your “favorite” phone contacts.
  • Any concerning student behavior should be reported to the CARE team using their  online report form.
  • Any concerning faculty and staff behavior should be reported to the FAST Team by emailing FacultyStaff.Assessment@ucdenver.edu or calling 303-315-0182.

Preparedness

There are a number of ways to be prepared in the unlikely event of a threat on campus.

  • The CU Denver | Anschutz Police department provides information on what to do if there is an active harmer in your vicinity and offers active shooter presentations and drills.
  • Faculty and staff can review the CU: Active Shooter Awareness training. This is a SkillSoft course available on the university’s portal, accessed through my.cu.edu.
  • Faculty and staff can request Active Harmer Presentations for their departments or individual classrooms from the AHEC Police Department by contacting Jason Mollendor at 303-556-5000 or going to the AHEC Police Safety Resources website.

Support

Students impacted by these events can access the CU Denver Student and Community Counseling Center. Faculty and staff can seek support through the  State Employee Assistance Program.

While it is an unfortunate fact that absolute safety can never be guaranteed, working together we can fulfill our shared responsibility to make our campuses and surrounding areas safer places to study, work and live.
