What is New Student Convocation?
New Student Convocation is the official welcome for all new students to the University of Colorado Denver. Similar to graduation being the end of a student’s university experience, this event marks the beginning of a student’s time at CU Denver and involves a pinning ceremony. This is an opportunity for incoming students to come together for their first official university event.
This year's ceremony features a keynote by the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Dr. Kim Hunter Reed.
The ceremony is preceded by receptions hosted by each of the schools and colleges that make up the University and followed by a bbq for students, parents, faculty and staff in attendance. All new students will receive a spirit shirts at the bbq.
What do I do to attend?
Students may sign up for convocation and CU Denver Prep Week events at New Student Orientation or here. All new students are expected to attend. All attendees are asked to check-in between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m in Tivoli Commons to receive a gown and be directed to the appropriate reception location.
What are the school and college receptions?
Each of the seven schools and colleges at CU Denver hosts a reception before the ceremony for new students as an opportunity to meet future classmates, faculty, staff and administration. Get answers to last-minute questions, make some friends and learn about classes and programs you might be interested in. Light refreshments are served. At the end of the reception, students will put on their gowns to march to the gym for the formal ceremony.
Please note: The College of Architecture and Planning hosts an all-day orientation for new students on August 18th. CAP students will receive information directly from the college about the orientation and participation in the convocation ceremony.
What does my family do while I'm at my school/college reception?
Parents and Family Members are invited to meet other families and University administration at a separate reception in the Tivoli Turnhalle from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Family members will be escorted to the gymnasium in time to watch the students make their entry into the gym for the ceremony. Afterward, everyone is invited to the bbq on the athletic field.
Faculty and Staff register here.
