Why I chose CU Denver...

(... and not any of the other schools that accepted me.)

by Vicki Hildner

The CU Denver class of 2016 has arrived from all four corners of the United States—and points beyond. Fresh off their many successes as high school students, they come here with hopes of becoming engineers, physicians, attorneys, teachers and digital artists. Some were lured by the BA/BS-MD program or the Denver Bound program. Others came for the opportunities in the University Honors and Leadership (UHL) program or because of their connection to the university through programs like Aurora LIGHTS (LeadInG the way to careers in HealTh Sciences). Still others chose CU Denver, as so many have before them, because they fell in love with Denver and with Colorado.

Many had a choice of schools. They chose CU Denver. Here, in their own words, they explain why.

Kara Brown

Bragging Rights:
Graduated with a 4.1 GPA. Scored 2160 (out of possible 2400) on SAT. Played basketball and volleyball, ran track and field. Has lived all over the world with her missionary parents.
Also accepted at:
University of Chicago, CU-Boulder, Colorado State University
Why CU Denver?
“In the end, the UHL program made CU Denver the obvious choice. I like UHL because it’s a community within the university’s larger community, so there’s more opportunity to get to know people.”
Quotable:
“I am pretty set on going into civil engineering, in the hopes that I can eventually work overseas developing infrastructure like bridges, roads and clean water supply. CU Denver is a good place to get to know professors, make connections and get internships I will need.”

Ryan Farmer

Bragging Rights:
California Scholarship Federation Scholar. U.S. Figure Skating Athlete Alumni Ambassador. U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund Grant recipient. 2011 U.S. Figure Skating National Competitor in Ice Dance (9th place). 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Pacific Coast silver medalist in Ice Dance (2nd place). Eagle Scout.
Also accepted at:
Loyola Marymount University, Northeastern University, University of Utah, University of the Pacific, Willamette University, CU-Boulder, Fordham University, San Diego State University, University of Denver, California Lutheran University
Why CU Denver?
“After discovering CU Denver’s Music & Entertainment Industry Studies track, I didn't look back. This track is for non-performing students and focuses heavily on composition, theory, production, mastering and much more of exactly what I was looking for! I am hoping that, with the knowledge and experience that this program brings me, I will end up with a job that I actually enjoy doing.”
Quotable:
“Bring on the knowledge! Bring on the snow! Bring on the good times! Colorado, bring it! I'm a bit excited as you may notice."

Filiberto Morales

Bragging Rights:
National Honor Society. Played varsity soccer for four years (conference status three years in a row). Bilingual (Spanish and English).
Also accepted at:
Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University
Why CU Denver?
“When I visited, I could see the diversity on campus, not only in ethnicity but also in students’ ages. Also, I really love the location. I could have the experience of living in the city and in a dorm but still be close enough to visit my parents at home. Additionally, being accepted into the BA/BS-MD program was really a dream come true. Becoming a physician and giving back to the community has always been a goal of mine.”
Quotable:
“My parents never had the opportunity to go to college, so that really motivates me. I want to take advantage of everything a college education can provide.”

Ivanna Buchynsky

Bragging rights:
Captain, varsity cheerleaders. National Honor Society. Graduated in the top 5 percent of her class. Bilingual (Russian and English). Volunteer, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.
Also accepted at:
University of Maryland, Rutgers University, CU-Boulder, UCCS
Why CU Denver?
“I fell in love with Denver. It feels very homey but also with big city excitement. When I came to visit through the Denver Bound program, the professors took the time to get to know me and make me feel welcome. That was very special.”
Quotable:
“I immigrated to this country from the Ukraine when I was 5 years old. My parents brought me here so I can be whatever I want to be in the future. And it’s going really well!”

Josh Blair

Bragging rights:
Played club volleyball. Spanish Honor Society, English Honor Society, National Honor Society. Hot yoga instructor.
Also accepted at:
Savannah College of Art and Design, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University
Why CU Denver?
“I want to go into 3-D animation and visual effects, and I fell in love with the program at CU Denver. The success rate of students coming out of that program and getting jobs quickly is outstanding."

Quotable:
“The cool thing about Denver is that it’s a fitness heaven. When I came here for my interview, I saw 10 hot yoga studios on the drive in from the airport. I was so mad I didn’t bring workout clothes!”

Alison Sanchez

Bragging Rights:
Ranked fifth in class. Played on girls’ basketball team at Trinidad High School, taking fourth place in state her senior year.
Also accepted at:
University of Denver, Colorado State University, UCCS
Why CU Denver?
“I just liked the atmosphere of the school. People were outside, there was music, it felt very urban—a lot different from Trinidad, Colorado!”
Quotable:
“It’s just an amazing opportunity to be in the BA/BS- MD program, because I know it’s very difficult to get into med school, and this will be a huge help. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Kevin Huang

Bragging Rights:
Took 16 AP classes. 4.8 weighted GPA. Valedictorian. Tennis team. Plays violin. National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Key Club.
Also accepted at:
Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, UCLA, Emory University, CU-Boulder
Why CU Denver?
“I’m really set on becoming a doctor, and the BA/BS-MD program would help me get into medical school. I’m planning to become an anesthesiologist. CU Denver is also close to home, so if something comes up at home, it’s easy for me to get back to see my family and friends.”
Quotable:
“Downtown Denver was a huge factor in my decision on coming to CU Denver because being so close to where everything is going on is something truly extraordinary.”

Janet Mensah

Bragging Rights:
Valedictorian. National Honor Society. Aurora LIGHTS.
Also Accepted at:
Howard University, University of Montana, Drew University
Why CU Denver?
“To be honest, CU Denver didn’t start out as my first choice, because I thought I wanted a traditional college setting. But then I learned that CU Denver had an affiliation with the Aurora LIGHTS program that I had participated in for all four years of high school, and I didn’t want to lose that connection. The fact that the School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus is actually part of the same university was additional icing on the cake.”
Quotable:
“I need a balance of work and relaxing time, because all work and no play makes Janet a very dull and burned-out student. CU Denver is perfect. It's smack in the middle of downtown, so there's always something to do! I must say coming to CU Denver is another thing I can put on my ‘well-made decisions’ list.”

Iman Mohamed

Bragging Rights: Daniels Fund Scholarship. Vice-president of National Honor Society. Plays violin. Varsity tennis team.
Also accepted at: University of Denver
Why CU Denver?
“I have wanted to be a doctor since I was eight years old. I used to put on clinics for my five siblings. When I first heard about the BA/BS-MD program, I couldn’t believe it was real,
because it takes all the stress out of applying to med school. I assumed it must cost extra money, but it doesn’t! After I become a doctor, I hope to return to my home country of Sudan to help the people there.”

Quotable:
“When I first got accepted to college, everyone in my house cried.”

Eric Freud

Bragging Rights:
John Lynch Foundation 2012 Exceptional Star of the Year Award for athletics, academics and community service. 3.93 weighted GPA. Only student at George Washington High School to receive the Business Excellence CTE Award for 2012. Varsity lettered in tennis for four years. Selected to the Colorado All-state Tennis Team senior year.
Also accepted at:
Applied only to CU Denver because it was his first choice for Business School.
Why CU Denver?
“I’ve already taken International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in business and management, economics, statistics and calculus. I wanted to go to CU Denver, because it places among the leading business schools in the nation. My dream is to get a job with the Broncos, so I like CU Denver’s sports management program.”
Quotable:
“I like the downtown atmosphere in Denver. Being in the city, there are so many business connections that I can make and opportunities available to me.”
