AURORA, Colo. – When the 2013-14 academic year begins next fall, the first cohort of undergraduate students seeking a degree in bioengineering will begin this new program
. The Colorado Commission on Higher Education approved the program last month following the stamp of approval by the University of Colorado Board of Regents.
Students interested in pursuing bioengineering showed up on the Anschutz Medical Campus this week for an open house to learn more about the program. As part of the event, attendees toured some of the labs and classrooms. “They seemed to enjoy the tours, as they got to see firsthand some of the ongoing technologies,” said Karen Gilbert, coordinator, Department of Bioengineering.
Stopping by for the Open House along with the students were educators from area high schools who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the program and opportunities for their students.
As the first program of its kind in Colorado, the Department of Bioengineering’s mission is to improve human health through the application of engineering principles, ideas, methods and inventions for addressing clinical problems. Experts predict that the field of bioengineering will be one of the fastest growing job markets in the next decade
For undergraduates entering the discipline, the pre-bioengineering plan is for students to complete general requirements during the first two years then progress through specialized courses in the third and fourth academic years. Overall, the undergraduate program demonstrates the collaboration that extends from the Denver Campus to the Anschutz Medical Campus. It builds a partnership of unprecedented instructional resources that provides links from classroom instruction to research with clinicians and engineers.
Several students already have submitted applications for admission to the program. .
An Open House focused on graduate-level programming is set for next Friday, Nov. 2, noon to 5 p.m. in the Bushnell Auditorium, Building 500.
