DENVER - They stopped; they served. Christine Wood and Yesenia Trebizo pitched in with other CU Denver students today to make blankets, beanies and hygiene kits for the homeless.
The items will be distributed to homeless people around Denver later this month as part of a Random Acts of Kindness service project led by the Experiential Learning Center and the Office of Student Life.
Wood, a freshman studying anthropology, and Trebizo, a junior majoring in public health, said they typically do homework between classes in the North Classroom. But when they saw the Random Acts of Kindness preparation effort in the atrium, they decided to take part.
"It's a good cause," Wood said as she knitted a beanie. "They're going to the homeless people. We see them on campus and around town."
Nelson Rodriguez, a post-grad intern in internships and community engagement in the Experiential Learning Center, said students assembled 200 hygiene kits. The bags included small-sized deodorant, lotion, shampoo, soap and other items that were donated by area hotels.
"There were a variety of different hotels that gave us all of the items, so the response was great," he said.
Tony Smith, director of the Experiential Learning Center and Undergraduate Experiences, said Stop & Serve events are held monthly in the North Classroom Atrium to promote volunteerism and community engagement. Past projects have included decorating care packages for Project Angel Heart and making "no sew" fleece blankets for children in Denver hospitals.
At today's Stop & Serve, students were encouraged to sign up for the Random Acts of Kindness distribution day from 2 to 5 p.m. on March 29. The campus-wide project, which will organize volunteers into groups and fan out to various parts of the city, is also open to faculty and staff. To register go to www.ucdenver.edu/elc or call the Experiential Learning Center at 303-556-6656.
