Students and staff initiate efforts to collect donations for fire victims

​DENVER and AURORA, Colo. - Students on the CU Denver Campus with Auraria initiated a fundraising effort this week in cooperation with the Red Cross to offer support to victims of Colorado's wildfires.

At the Tivoli Student Center today, students welcomed monetary donations from fellow students, faculty and staff. All funds will be forwarded to the Red Cross for distribution.

"We hope to make a meaningful contribution to these fire victims," said Gordon Hamby, president, Student Government Association. 

At the same time, the Exempt Professional Assembly (EPA) -- a university staff organization -- annouinced an effort to help victims of the Colorado wildfires. The EPA Wildfire Item Donation Drive will collect items (not cash donations) until Tuesday, July 31 -- extension of deadline will be considered based on need. 

EPA collection sites have been set up at both the CU Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses. Donations will be delivered directly to Colorado Springs and Fort Collins donation centers. 
 
EPA President Danny Felipe-Morales is appealing to all university staff and faculty to consider helping these victims. "Your contribution to this cause will truly make a difference in the lives of these individuals and families currently coping though such adversity." 
 

Items specifically needed include:
- New Batteries
- New Socks and Underwear
- New/used Toys/Board Games for Children
- New Sunscreen
- New School Supplies
-New/used backpacks
- New/used work boots
- New/used sleeping bags
- New Personal Hygiene Items
- New Baby items (diapers, bottles, etc.)
- New/used Pet Supplies

As newly elected head of the EPA, Felipe-Morales said, "I would like to recoginze the new 2012-13 EPA Board for stepping up to the plate and working collaboratively to get this drive started in such a short time. Special recognition goes out to Malaika White, Nicole Ganley, Carissa Smith, Blake Humphrey, Leeann Fields, Tamika Coleman, Joey Failma, Larry Armenta and Omar Montgomery."
