Cancer Center receives Safeway gift for breast cancer research

Safeway presents grant to UCCC.
Grateful appreciation for Safeway's gift for research

Safeway donates $425,000 for Breast Cancer Research

AURORA, Colo. (Feb. 26, 2009) – Breast cancer research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center received new funding today thanks to a generous gift from Safeway.  The grocer presented a $425,000 check to the University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC) as part of a giving program that raised more than $1 million in Safeway’s five state operating areas.

UCCC will use the grant to develop the infrastructure to support very sophisticated breast cancer tissue studies. The studies will be part of collaborative research with a consortium of comprehensive cancer centers to help us learn why some tumors respond to various therapies and others do not.

Anthony Elias, MD, associate director for clinical research at UCCC, accepted the gift and said, “We will be using this generous gift not only to help support our efforts in this consortium, but also to pay for the planning and seed grants necessary to develop multiple collaborative clinical/basic grants including a SPORE (Specialized Programs of Research Excellence) in breast cancer.”  UCCC also will use the grant money to conduct therapeutic clinical trials with women with locally advanced breast cancer.

“Our customers, employees and suppliers continue to inspire us with their generosity and dedication to the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer. Pennies, nickels and dimes, it all adds up at the check stand and we were thrilled to donate a record $425,000 toward cutting edge research at the University of Colorado’s Cancer Center,” said Kris Staaf,  director of public affairs, Safeway, Inc.

This week’s gift from Safeway is in addition to a $200,000 gift to UCCC last year.

The University of Colorado Cancer Center is the Rocky Mountain region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI has given only 40 cancer centers this designation, deeming membership as “the best of the best.” Headquartered on the University of Colorado Denver’s Anschutz Medical Campus, UCCC is a consortium of three state universities (Colorado State University, University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Colorado Denver) and six institutions (AMC Cancer Research Center, The Children’s Hospital, Denver Health, Denver VA Medical Center, National Jewish Health and University of Colorado Hospital). Together, our 400+ members are working to ease the cancer burden through cancer care, research, education and prevention and control. Learn more at www.uccc.info
