Announcing Support for Office 2011 for Mac


IT Services will begin supporting Microsoft Office Suite 2011 for Mac as of June 20, 2011. The University of Colorado Denver has a software agreement with Microsoft and will provide this software for download and installation for use on university owned Mac systems. IT Services support for this product will include, installation, upgrading, configuration, and basic troubleshooting.  The major difference between Office 2008 and Office 2011 for Mac, is that Outlook is now offered as part of the Microsoft Office Suite 2011 for Mac; replacing Microsoft Entourage 2008 as the Microsoft email client.  
It is encouraged that you work with your departmental LAN Admins or IT Services to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of upgrading your Microsoft Office software to the latest version, Office 2011.  During the testing period of Office 2011 within IT Services, testers noted the following: Outlook 2011 for Mac allows users to import and use emails within Office PST (Personal Folders) files, however Outlook 2011 does not allow the creation of PST files. Additionally, users have noted that individual Outlook 2011 calendars are not labeled and this can cause confusion when viewing multiple calendars at the same time.

Although Office 2011 applications were stable during testing, there are several Microsoft Office updates that should be installed.  Most importantly, Service Pack 1 for Office 2011 has been released and it is strongly recommended that all users install this update to increase Office 2011 stability and security. Other updates available for Office 2011 should also be installed to ensure greater Office file compatibility and application reliability.

Online and Instructor Led Training (ILT).”  Once inside SkillSoft, you can search for the following books available to employees:

University employees wishing to upgrade their current version of Office for Mac (2004 or 2008) to Office 2011, can do so free of charge using our University of Colorado Denver Microsoft Office Software Portal.  To access the Microsoft Portal, please go to: You will be required to enter your University credentials (username and password) to access this website.  Once inside the portal, Office 2011 for Mac download links will be shown.  There will be Office Suite 2011 for Mac standalone install (.dmg) files and disc image (.iso) files available for download in the Microsoft Portal.

Employees with non-university owned Mac systems and students wishing to purchase or upgrade to Office 2011 for Mac at an educational discount can do so by visiting the Anschutz Medical Campus or Auraria Campus Bookstores in person or online.
