Program Overview

At CU Denver, we offer two options within the civil engineering PhD program. The doctor of philosophy in civil engineering is a technical degree intended for students with an undergraduate degree in engineering. The doctor of philosophy in civil engineering systems is a more flexible degree intended for students with undergraduate degrees in other fields such as science, mathematics, or economics. This program is administered jointly with the University of Colorado Boulder.

Students enrolled in the civil engineering PhD program may choose from five areas of study.

  • Hydrologic, environmental, and sustainability engineering

Frequently Asked Questions

The coursework in the primary and secondary areas must consist of ten courses—students must take at least five courses in his/her primary area of concentration and at least three courses in a secondary area of concentration. Other courses may be recommended by the student’s advisor.

Research spanning two or more of the five college departments is strongly encouraged and is a major strength of the program.

Coursework: 30 credit hours
Research/dissertation: 30 credit hours
Total: 60 credit hours

PhD (Domestic) deadlines: Fall: March 15, Spring: September 15

  • Application
  • Application fee – $50 domestic; $75 international
  • Statement of purpose – must be an original essay submitted with application. Scanned copies will not be accepted for submission.
  • Resume – must be submitted with application
    • Bioengineering applicants must complete essay questions and an application background survey. Contact the department for more information
  • Official transcripts – we require one official copy of each previous transcript. Send e-transcripts to the Graduate School at graduateadmissions@ucdenver.edu
  • Letters of recommendation – three are required (two for civil engineering); a 4th is optional
  • Official GRE scores – the college has removed the evaluation of GRE scores for admission decisions. If choosing to submit, send scores officially through ETS using code #4875. Preferred minimum score of 300+.
