Announcing the New Comcast Center, 1-31-2017

Dear faculty, staff and students,

I’m writing today to announce the launch of the Comcast Media and Technology Center at CU Denver. Made possible by a $5 million cash and in-kind gift from Comcast, the multidisciplinary center will focus on the intersection of creativity, media and technology. It will enable students from the College of Arts & Media and the College of Engineering and Applied Science to apply what they are learning in the classroom to solve real-world challenges.

Unique in the Rocky Mountain region, the center will serve CU Denver students and members of the community with a range of programs focused on developing next-generation media and technology skills applicable to the digital economy. It will bring together engineering, arts and media students in a collaborative environment to discover new approaches to and methods for addressing modern media and technology challenges; they’ll also have access to Comcast internships. The center’s research will foster innovation, creating and engaging with communications and entertainment platforms of the future. The community and area businesses will be invited to become actively engaged with projects designed to push the boundaries of media and examine the impact and promise of new technology.

CU Denver’s partnership with Comcast emerged from a bold idea: to create an exciting, innovative resource for creative technology with a pipeline of workers with the skills to develop, execute and accelerate entrepreneurialism in the tech sector. Comcast is a leader in the technology community in Colorado, with more than 1,000 employees working in downtown Denver. And, as you well know, CU Denver provides high quality, hands-on education to students in the heart of the city. Together, the two are a natural fit to encourage growth and innovation in multimedia industries, which is of particular importance in Denver with its high concentration of broadcast, media and technology companies.

The center will be located in the Tivoli – you may have already seen the construction underway. If you haven’t, I encourage you to go check it out – it’s in the lower level, where the Starz Film Center once was.  It will officially open in March and classes will begin in the fall.

The Comcast Media and Technology Center is an example of how CU Denver works with our industry partners both to meet workforce needs and to develop innovative approaches to the emerging issues of today. We’re grateful for Comcast’s support and delighted to add this state-of-the-art center to our campus.
