Assistant Professor-Mechanical Engineering (Position# 11058)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Applications from candidates in mechanical engineering and related fields will be considered. Individuals with a proven track record in research areas including controls, systems engineering, mechatronics, autonomous systems, solid mechanics and/or experimental fluids-thermal research are encouraged to apply.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is located on the Denver campus and offers an ABET accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and an interdisciplinary PhD program. The College of Engineering and Applied Science also has PhD programs in Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Computer Science.

Job Responsibilities: The candidate will be expected develop an externally funded research program while publishing in peer-reviewed science and engineering journals. The candidate will also be expected to develop and teach lecture and laboratory courses at all levels of Mechanical Engineering and advise student research.

Required Qualifications: The candidate must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and have demonstrated expertise in Mechanical Engineering as evidenced by the candidate’s publication and funding record.

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) is home to five departments, including Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an ABET accredited Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program along with a Master of Science (MS), Master of Engineering (ME), and Engineering and Applied Science PhD (EAS-PHD) program (click here for program info). Recently, the department has introduced a Biomechanics-focused MS track as well as Motorsports ME track. The mechanical engineering department at CU Denver has recently placed 1st overall in the nation, in back to back years, when competing in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition. The department graduates approximately 60 students in mechanical engineering every year from the BS program.

CU Denver is located in close proximity to several national research labs, public institutions, and government entities including, the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), the NIST, the VA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado State University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Denver, the Air Force Academy, and the University of Wyoming.​​​​

Denver is a vibrant urban center with a metro-population of 2.8 million. Denver is well known for its mile-high altitude and more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Located near the base of the Rocky Mountains, Denver residents are just 1-2 hours away from world-class skiing, climbing, biking and hiking. As a result, Colorado is ranked as one of the healthiest states.

Denver has an excellent public transportation system run by RTD. CU Denver has two lightrail stops at CU Denver and one lightrail stop at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Both campuses are conveniently located near bus service, including transportation to Denver International Airport. CU Denver also connects to the Cherry Creek bike path, allowing students, faculty and staff to easily bike to work.

Denver has four major league sports teams including the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Avalanche. Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the Pepsi Center and Coors Field are all within walking distance from CU Denver.

Denver is also rich in culture with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Sante Fe Arts District, Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Colorado Convention Center, and 16th Street Mall. Award-winning restaurants and craft breweries are spread throughout the many unique and vibrant Denver neighborhoods.
