Our mission is to provide all guitar students with the skills needed to become a proficient, viable and versatile musician in today's diverse musical marketplace. Our purpose is also to enhance and support all of the various degree programs, beyond the Performance program, by providing them with productive, educated and informed guitar students. Another important part of our mission is to create a unique identity as a Commercial/Jazz Guitar program within the College of Arts and Media as well as a unique identity nationally.
Excellence In Musical Training:
This is the first and most important component needed to prepare our guitarists. Employing qualified, versatile, educated, energetic guitar instructors who are also working professionals is a vital part of ensuring musical excellence. The following elements are a vital part of the guitar curriculum:
- Training in many musical styles including jazz, classical, world music, Latin and rock
- Ensemble training
- Accompaniment training
- Proficiency in linear and chordal sightreading
- Proficiency in solo guitar performance
Ensemble playing is a valuable component of every musician's musical training. Guitarists at UCD have opportunities to participate in the following ensembles:
- Jazz Combo
- Dixie Ensemble
- Percussion Ensemble
- Sightreading and Improvisation
- Styles Ensemble
Cooperation with the Visual Arts and Theater and Film programs is another important aspect of our stage that will enrich the students appreciation of other art forms as well as creating unity among the various arts disciplines. A guitar student's participation in musical theater productions will provide a performance option outside of the ensemble experience as well as real world training needed to work as a "show musician". Support for the visual arts will be achieved by making small groups of guitar students available to the Visual Arts department for art show openings. Work with art openings, at galleries, enhances the aesthetic impression of the art show by adding atmosphere and provides students with an awareness and appreciation of the other art disciplines in our university and in our world.
Contributing To All College of Arts and Media Disciplines:
Enhancing the areas of Music Business, Performance, Recording Arts and Music Industry Studies, by creating educated, aware, sensitive, informed musicians/guitarists. The guitar program is an integral part of the entire college's goal to educate our students so that each achieves excellence in art, technology and commerce.
