Careers today require analytical skills, collaboration, multicultural and global understanding, data literacy, and excellent written and verbal communication. A degree and certification in sociology provide students with the knowledge, skills, and training necessary to succeed in today’s workplace and improve the world. The BA in Sociology also offers excellent preparation for graduate education.
CU Denver’s Sociology faculty includes engaging, award-winning teachers and highly-esteemed social researchers that offer students a multifaceted learning experience focused on how individuals and institutions interact to shape our social world. Courses bring sociological theory and research to bear on critical social issues in the communities where we live and work, such as poverty and homelessness, health inequities and healthcare access, gender equity, immigration, racial and ethnic injustice, policing, and crime.
The Sociology BA provides ultimate flexibility for students, offering degree completion online (courses in 8-week or full-semester formats), in-person, or with a mix of the two modalities. The same outstanding faculty teach across online and in-person modes. Students pursuing their degree online have the same opportunities for research participation and pursuit of honors research and an honors degree as students attending on campus.
Sociology offers one concentration—Gender & Society, which upon completion, also awards students a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. Additionally, several specialized certificates can be completed while pursuing the BA (in Sociology or another major), including Criminology; Families and Social Welfare; Community Health and Medicine; and Justice, Allyship, Diversity, and Equity (JADE). Certificates are entered on students’ transcripts upon completion, providing them valuable credentials even before graduating.

A concentration in Gender and Society provides students with an understanding of how gender plays a crucial role in the experiences of females, males, and gender non-conforming individuals.
The Department of Sociology offers four certificates that provide majors and non-majors a focused program of study around major areas of professional practice.
Student Testimonials
I transferred to CU Denver for the Fall Semester of 2020, after attending Front Range Community College for a year. During my first year at CU Denver, I was majoring in Communications, until I decided that I liked Sociology a lot more and switched my major! Ever since I switched to Sociology, I have loved my classes, and have been more curious about the social connections that I make in, and outside of school. CU Denver has allowed me to learn in a diverse, and urban environment, and the curriculum, I feel reflects that. As a Senior, I have found a community within the Sociology department and Sociology department staff. I never wanted a traditional college experience, and my time at CU Denver has been nontraditional in all the best ways!
