The Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) is a STEM-certified program at the Business School which combines management acumen with technical knowledge to help students become tomorrow’s leaders in information technology. MSIS allows students to customize their degree path to align with personal goals through electives and specializations in either Business Intelligence Systems or Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. Through cutting-edge curriculum, applied software projects, and direct connections to industry partners, students will learn how to harness the power of information technology for business.

Students in this course come from an assortment of backgrounds, bringing experience from many fields into the program. Featuring in-person, online, and hybrid classroom environments, along with evening options, scheduling is flexible for working professionals.

Networking, database, security, governance, business strategy, and project management will all be covered. The degree totals 30 credit hours, consisting of 15 core hours and 15 elective hours.

For the core curriculum, five classes are required: database management systems, information systems strategy, information systems security and privacy, along with two additional classes chosen by the student. This curriculum provides a basis for understanding the intricacies that occur when building, integrating, and governing information systems.

Students then choose five elective classes, aimed at a specific specialization (i.e., business intelligence or cybersecurity and information assurance) or a custom course of study. This course also includes a 4+1 program, designed to undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue their Master of Science degree.

Upon graduation, students will have mastered these five values: leverage data, manage strategically, design thoughtfully, act securely, and behave ethically. Through these learning pillars, graduates will have a strong grasp of technical concepts and understand how to effect change through integrated technologies. Industry specialties like business intelligence, computer and network support, database management, data warehousing, project management, web and mobile application development, security, and quality assurance are areas where graduates commonly find roles.

Alumni Success Stories

anne-bailey
Anne Bailey, a MS in Information Systems graduate class of '00, reflects on her at CU Denver Business School fondly. Working through the dot-com boom, Anne was offered the option to return to school through her company. She wanted a school that provided a comprehensive learning experience that fit within a full-time work schedule. Anne saw that CU Denver offered a combination of evening, online, and convenient on-campus class options, fitting perfectly within her workload. While working in Human Resources, Anne felt that getting a MS in Information Systems would help her understand more of the world around her. Since graduation, Anne had this to say: "every organization I’ve helped lead has had some sort of technology component, so having a solid understanding of tech has given me an incredible foundation...", further emphasizing the profound effect her time at CU Denver had on her career.

Specialized Dual Degree Option

Many students pursue the dual degree option of pairing an MS in Business Analytics with an MS in Information Systems (Business Intelligence Specialization). These degree options offer complementary courses and can be completed together efficiently.

Additional Dual Degree Options

Dual degree options for Master of Science programs include all of our MBA programs and all Business School Master of Science programs. The amount of credits in each dual degree depends on the amount of overlap between degree programs.

If you are applying for both degrees, you will only need to submit one online application and pay one application fee.

As a graduate of the program, international students are able to apply for Optional Practice Training (OPT) and stay in the US for an additional 24 months.

The GMAT/GRE is not required for this program if the applicant has a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better from a US-accredited four-year undergraduate institution or the successful completion of a graduate degree and three or more years of full-time professional work experience. If the applicant does not meet these requirements, they will be asked to submit a statement that outlines other indicators of exceptional motivation, such as solid upper-division performance, GMAT or GRE scores, and other relevant professional experience.
