Building Department

The University of Colorado Denver Building Department has been in existence since 1991 and acts as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) over all construction, alteration and remodeling activity at the Anschutz Medical Campus, the Downtown Denver Campus and now, CU South.  The department is comparable to the cities of Aurora and Denver Building Departments for construction in those municipalities.  The major functions of the department include code review and interpretation for design, development and construction in order to ensure that the minimum code requirements are met, permitting of all projects, project inspections and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (CO) upon project completion.  The department and program is mandated by the Regents of the University of Colorado and authority is obtained through the Office of the State Architect, State Buildings Program.
All permitting and inspections for construction, alteration and/or remodeling activity are channeled through this department.  No city, county or state permits shall be issued for any project, with the following exceptions:
State Electrical and State Plumbing permits and inspections through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) shall be required on all projects at any University of Colorado Denver building within the boundaries of the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC).
All buildings that are part of the Downtown Denver Campus (including AHEC) shall be required to procure plan review and permitting through Denver Fire Department (DFD) for any/all fire alarm and suppression alterations, at the discretion of DFD.
Both hospital affiliates (University of Colorado Hospital and Childrens Hospital of Colorado), may be required to procure permits from the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS), Division of Fire Prevention and Control and/or other agencies, depending upon the work being performed and the funding sources for the project.
Annually, the Building Department issues an average of 225 permits and performs over 1,200 inspections for the university and its affiliates.  The department is managed by the Campus Building Official and is fully staffed with International Code Council (ICC) certified inspectors.
