In 1984, a group of community
leaders embarked on a mission to tackle one of Denver’s biggest
challenges. Specifically, they wanted to foster more productive
cooperation between the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. Their
vision, and the support of the University of Colorado’s Graduate School
of Public Affairs, led to the creation of an innovative model for
leadership development.
This model was put to the test when 24 diverse,
experienced community leaders were assembled for the inaugural class of
the Denver Community Leadership Forum (DCLF). Together they learned
about issues ranging from conflict management and collaborative problem
solving to individual leadership styles and group facilitation. That
summer they also started a unique legacy by completing the first of many
DCLF Outward Bound adventures at the Outward Bound Leadville Mountain
Center.
Hundreds of leaders have since followed in their footsteps. These DCLF alumni include elected officials and executive directors, vice presidents and volunteer coordinators, small business owners and students pursuing advanced degrees.
You too can be part of this legacy. Whether it’s
applying for the DCLF experience or taking advantage of the numerous
sponsorship opportunities available, you will join a decades-long
tradition of strengthening the fabric of our community.
