Responses from the 2006 alumni survey found that the majority of alumni (94%) report working in the public nonprofit sectors. The most common sector of employment is local government with approximately one in three alumni employed in this sector, closely followed by those employed in nonprofit settings (24%). More specifically, three-quarters of the respondents (75%) report they are employed in the same field as their MPA; only 7% report they are employed in a different field not of their own choice. The responses further support that the vast majority of students are employed in positions envisioned by both them and the MPA program.
Data was also collected from alumni concerning the MPA program’s contribution to their careers. This data reflects the variations in our students’ needs. Some of our students are mid-career students and pursue an MPA degree to improve their performance in their current job or attain promotions. Others are pre-service students who are gaining the MPA degree to start a new or first career. These differences are reflected in the responses. For example, slightly under half (46%) of respondents indicated they had their current job when they were enrolled in their program; another 55% indicated they started their current job after graduation. Almost all of our students work while pursuing their degree and 80% report the program improved their performance in their existing job while in the program.
