Crime Analyst Certificate


The School of Public Affairs offers a 5-course, graduate level crime analyst certificate that is administered by the Master of Criminal Justice program. Anyone who has completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is eligible to enroll in the crime analyst certificate program.

The certificate emphasizes criminal justice and criminology-related subjects, but the analytic skills learned in the certificate training can be easily transferred to non-criminal justice and criminology fields.

Students will be able to complete the certificate in a minimum of 1.5 years (3 semesters) using courses already offered at CU Denver. Several of the courses required for this certificate are offered both online and in person. The entire certificate may be available online in the future.

With the analyst certificate, students will set themselves apart from other applicants in today’s competitive job market by mastering analytical skills. Courses will be taught by current and former analysts (some of whom are current UCD faculty), while also gaining important theoretical and methodological knowledge from all UCD professors. 

The certificate requires the successful completion (no less than a B-) of 5 graduate level classes*, including:

CRJU 5003 Criminal Justice Research Methods
CRJU 5004 Criminal Justice Statistics
CRJU 5325 Qualitative Research Methods OR
PUAD 5007 Qualitative Research Methods
CRJU 6600 Intelligence Writing and Briefing OR
ENGL 5175 Writing in the Social Sciences
CRJU 5331 Law Enforcement Analysis

*Similar classes may be substituted based on MCJ Program Director approval.
