University of Colorado Denver

School of Public Affairs

Message from the Dean

Welcome to th University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs.

As you explore our website and learn more about the school, I’m sure you’ll find our ranking as the top public affairs school in Colorado and among the best in the nation is well deserved.

We provide numerous programs, degrees and certificates that cater to students’ aspirations in criminal justice and public policy. Our downtown Denver location provides unprecedented access to a diverse urban environment where policy becomes practice. Opportunities abound for internships, hands-on experience and collaboration with organizations and government agencies, leading to future careers in criminal justice and public administration.  Our alumni network provides students with opportunities to meet and learn from successful leaders in the public and nonprofit arenas.

Our faculty are national and international leaders in a number of disciplines. According to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, SPA is ranked as a top 25 national leader in fields such as:
  • environmental policy and management
  • nonprofit management
  • public management administration
  • city management and urban policy.

Our online Master of Criminal Justice program continues to receive high ratings, including a number 12 national ranking in January 2016 by USN&WR.

The Buechner Institute for Governance, the school’s applied research arm, serves as a resource for policy development in Colorado and the nation. The Buechner Institute hosts a wide range of events throughout the year that focus on timely issues and attract audiences comprised of politicians, community leaders, scholars, students and many others.

SPA has great momentum as we move into next year and the future looks bright. We will welcome two new tenure-track faculty members in fall 2016, and in the coming academic year we will recruit two additional tenure-track faculty members to join us in fall 2017.

We will also introduce the Bachelor of Arts in Public Service degree program in fall 2016. This is an exciting new program that will prepare the next generation of leaders and managers to govern, serve and make decisions that promote the best interests of our communities. The BAPS degree will provide the skills and content knowledge to work in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and the emerging fourth sector that blends social and environmental concerns with business approaches.

Students continue to give high marks to the quality of instruction they receive at SPA and graduates go on to achieve great things in positions at the local, state and national level. I hope you will take some time to learn more about the CU Denver School of Public Affairs, and we invite you to visit us anytime.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.
