Through a truly interdisciplinary approach that integrates design, art, and science, the Scientific Media Design program offers an educational experience that combines collaboration, exploration, project-based learning and real world problem solving skills. Theoretical as well as practical knowledge prepares graduates for successful careers designing clear, accurate, communicative works for the sciences.
Students graduating from the Scientific Media Design program will:
- have a strong understanding of scientific process and scientific method
- have a passion for scientific problems and a desire to solve or explain them through visual means.
- demonstrate proficiency in current media technologies used in the communication of scientific topics to a variety of audiences.
- be accomplished visual communicators, able to utilize a combination of design tools in delivering a message to a given audience.
- be whole-mind thinkers with the ability to analyze, deconstruct, comprehend, and teach using design theory and design practice.
- have the ability and understanding to work collaboratively with people in various disciplines.
- have a deep understanding of professional practice and the ability to promote themselves an their clients in a professional manner.
Students who are applying for entrance into the Scientific Media Design program are required to submit a portfolio that consists of (1) a written statement, (2) a 10-12 piece portfolio of work, and (3) unofficial transcript(s) from all previous post-secondary education institutions with the understanding that scientific media design is a fall start program. Upon acceptance into the Scientific Media Design program, students may register for upper-division classes in the Scientific Media Design curriculum.
