Artist Biography

Michael Brohman received a Bachelors of Science in Design with an emphasis in Ceramics from Colorado State University in 1991. He began his graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and completed his degree at the University of Colorado Denver, earning a Masters of Architecture in 1995. Michael has been on the faculty at the University of Colorado Denver since 1996 in the Visual Arts Department as an Instructor of Sculpture. He has also taught summer courses at the Burren College of Art in County Claire, Ireland and at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, Scotland.

In 2003, he was awarded an Artist Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts. Additionally, he received a Faculty Development Grant and has twice been recognized for an Excellence in Teaching Award. Brohman has exhibited his work in sculpture gardens and galleries nationally and internationally. Selected outdoor exhibitions are the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, FL, Ford Sculpture Park in Vail, CO, and Platte Forum in Denver, CO. Selected gallery exhibitions include the 7th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition, Burren College of Art, Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, Lander Art Center, and Foothills Art Center. He is a member of Pirate: A Contemporary Art Oasis, an artist cooperative gallery in Denver.

SantaSangre by Michael BrohmanAlthough the form and materiality of his work varies, it consistently draws from the idea of observing, interpreting and recording human behaviors and beliefs. His work explores the ways in which experiences influence us and how we form identities.

Brohman's upcoming exhibitions:

    Brohman is completing an artist residency at the Santa Fe Art Instite during the month of July. The Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI) conducts a bi-annual competitive selection process for artist and writer residencies that focuses on the professional experience of the artist, the quality of their past work, and their potential to have a productive residency at SFAI.     His work will be featured in a solo exhibition at Pirate: Contemporary Art an artist cooperative gallery in Denver from August 15-31, 2008. Michael is a Pirate: Contermporary Art member artist.

    Brohman's work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Dairy Center for the
    Arts in Boulder, Colorado, during January 2009. The Dairy Center for the Arts provides the Boulder community diverse opportunities to create, learn and participate in high quality performing and visual arts experiences.
