Rick is a LEED© Accredited Professional architect and urban designer with over 20 years of experience, practicing at both large and mid-size firms as well as his own design firm. The work has entailed a wide variety of scales and types including housing, commercial, infrastructure/industrial and cultural projects as well as planning and urban design. Much of the planning work has been done internationally particularly in the Middle East and Asia. Sustainability has been a continual passion with a particular focus on the deep integration of systems and technology with human experience and design. Rick has taught planning and architecture design studios at all levels in both the graduate and under-graduate programs at the University of Colorado School of Architecture and Planning.
His work has been the recipient of more than 15 design awards including Colorado AIA Honor and Merit awards and state-wide recognition from the Colorado Renewable Energy Society. His work has been published in a variety of publications including the New York Times, Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture, Home Energy and featured in the journal “Colorado Architect”.
Rick has a Bachelor’s in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. He received his Masters in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with coursework in urban design and landscape architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He received a Watson Fellowship, a one year travel and research grant where he travelled around the world at 40 deg. N. latitude looking at the connection between vernacular architecture, place, and climate.
He is very involved in civic activities including ULI, AIA, Design Review Boards, and other City Boards and Commissions, as well as environmental and arts organizations. He has also spoke and lectured at numerous conferences particularly on sustainability and urban design. He has travelled extensively documenting many places around the world. He is also an avid cyclist, skier, hiker, climber, and mountain enthusiast.
