Center of Preservation Research

The Center of Preservation Research’s documentation program strives to preserve artifacts, structures and cultural landscapes with a wide range of tools and strategies. The accurate recordation and research of these objects and places become critical processes to create comprehensive documentation for scholars and interested members of the public. This increased awareness of our surroundings and how these places fit in a historical and spatial context are important outcomes for our documentation projects and research.

Why Document?

• To create a permanent and accurate record of a place, providing valuable information for future scholars
• To understanding the technology to be employed and why a technology employed is the correct one
• To record threatened or endangered resources for future research and study
• To raise public awareness of historic resources through public dissemination of digital and non-digital interpretive materials
• To gain a better understanding of artifacts, buildings and cultural landscapes that help define our communities
• To provide data management plans, archiving and metadata strategies in order to complete a more complete documentation process
• To develop interpretive, and heritage tourism goals based on documentation results
• To better understand the issues facing the creation of digital documentation standards and guidelines
• To training staff, students and volunteers on documentation strategies
